Help with COM ports

Important notice - If you are having problems with incoming COM ports despite knowing that your bluetooth device is correct set and running, visit this page!

BlueMotion (formally SonWii) sends sensor data (as well as keystrokes) in real time via bluetooth.  Information to the connected PC comes through what is called a COM port.  Windows (and i presume other operating systems) allows you to add an incoming port that receives a connection from a Bluetooth device.

Using Windows own Bluetooth drivers?

If you are using Windows own drivers visit this site to understand how to setup the incomming COM port: - Go to it!

Using some other Bluetooth drivers?

I only have experience using the WIDCOMM drivers so I can only provide help on this.  WIDCOMM is the beast of all Bluetooth drivers so I highly recommend you consider using it.  Here is a short tutorial on how to get the WIDCOMM drivers working…

10 steps to getting this thing working with the WIDCOMM drivers

  1. Go to the Broadcom website and download the driver - Go to it!
  2. Remove any existing bluetooth drivers/software on your PC if you have any (please note that if you were using the Windows drivers, you will not need to remove it as WIDCOMM replaces it without any problems)
  3. Install the WIDCOMM drivers (requires internet connection) + a restart (I think)
  4. Once restarted, double click on the Bluetooth icon on the treybar - this opens up My Bluetooth Places
  5. Click “Add bluetooth device” and follow the on scree instructions to pair your Sony Ericsson phone with the PC - On the list of services to access, I usually select everything (but you can be more careful if you wish or know better)
  6. Once you device is paired, in the My Bluetooth Places, click “View or modify configuration”
  7. Go to the “Local services” tab
  8. On the list, find “Bluetooth Serial Port” - look to see if there is a COM port number associated with it on the “COM Port” column (I usually find there is) - if you find a COM port number, this is your incomming COM port - use this value in the PC bouncing ball software.  If you do not see this, go to step 9.
  9. If there isnt a COM port associated with “Bluetooth Serial Port”, simply create one by clicking on “Add serial services” - I have never had to do this though.
  10. Enjoy!
